My family and I ate at Akita’s last night for the first time and loved it. The interior is lovely (lots of wood and plants, classy), and the food was delicious. I had the special (Wilimia (sp?) roll), my daughter had chicken teriyaki, husband had chicken + scallops hibachi. It’s BYOB - we brought a bottle of wine. We shared a red bean ice cream for dessert (yum!). The food was fresh, nicely presented and tasted great. Service was excellent. We will definitely be back soon.
The service at this place is horrible. The hostess–I’m guessing she’s the owner’s wife–rolled her eyes at us when we asked for a booth instead of a table. We ordered sushi a-la-carte, which arrived pretty quickly. I’ve had much better sushi, but most of the cooked stuff was edible. The problem was the Spicy Tuna Roll, which is usually my favorite. But here it was served using puréed tuna that was brownish and very fishy-tasting…as if it was spoiled. The same nasty hostess gave us attitude about the tuna, arguing that there was nothing wrong with it, and refused to remove it from the bill, even though we couldn’t eat it. She had a terrible attitude, and should not be waiting on customers. Next time I want sushi, I’ll go to Miyako Sushi on 2nd Street in Harrisburg. Akitas is not only the worst sushi I’ve had, it is the worst dining experience I’ve had in years.
Now on Market - great venue and food
We have been going to Akita’s since it first opened. We return about once a week because the food is just so fresh and delicious. The sushi is perhaps the freshest and best in the Harrisburg area. The hibachi is also delicious. Friday is a popular night at this restaurant and is probably the only night when service might be slow. So if you’re in a hurry, avoid Akita’s on Friday night.
We ate here a few weekends ago with another couple. It was a friday night and we were able to get the last table of 4 around 7-730. The service was a bit slow in the beginning as it took about 15-20 min after we started pouring our drinks until someone came to take our order. We were not in a hurry so it didn’t bother us and we felt it was better than waiting in the cold atrium at Sapporro East without drinks.
The sushi menu was very surprising. A vast improvement since the last time I checked this place out. There are about 3 pages worth of special rolls! When the food arrived the presentation was very good and the sushi tasted very fresh. I would certainly go back as this place deserves a 2nd chance on the service.
I would recommend all sushi lovers give this place another try!
We have just discovered Akita’s about 6 months ago after only dicovering that we like sushi in the last year. We have tried Literally EVERY sushi place on the east and west shore. Akita’s hands down has the highest quality sushi, rolls, and hibatchi. We go there at least once a week now, and sometimes twice. Ourfavorite for our everyday sushi cravings!
I just can’t say enough about this place. I love the food, the green tea ice cream (so does my grandson) and we love Michael and Jenny too!
Lisa and family
We enjoyed the sushi and hibachi meal we had at Akita in August 2008. Tea seemed expensive? - could it have been $2.50 for a small cup of hot tea? Maybe we were mistaken. Service was prompt. Waitress was polite. Lots of menu options.
I’ve been going to Akitas since the day it opened and continued to stay a loyal and frequent diner at the quaint little Japanese restaurant on State St. Since they opened, the owners, Michael and Jenny have continued to add to their exquisite menu. The service is nice, the location is great, the atmosphere is perfection. Oh and of course, the food is outstanding. I suggest you definitely try the Yaki Beef, Green Mussel, and Seafood bowl. I also always ask for the Enola roll which is pleasing to both taste and sight.
I will stay a loyal customer for a long long time and suggest that you try this place out if you have not already. Also, price range is very reasonable. Go to Akitas, you won’t regret it.
Akitas has a very nice atmosphere, your typical Japanese style decor. Traditional Japanese music was playing in the background. I started with a bowl of miso soup which was good. The tofu definitely melted in your mouth. I would’ve liked it more if it had scallions in it. The fish was fresh. The owners were very friendly and attentive to my needs. The prices are very competitive. I will definitely be going back.
