This restaurant has definitely improved with age. I too was disappointed my first visit but decided to give it a second chance about 4 months later. Had 4 of us for dinner and food was very good, service attentive; and prices in line with other restaurants of this caliber. Did a wine dinner the other night and the menu was good and the wines paired were interesting. Give this place another try.
I’ve had wonderful food and drink at Blue. Service has been slow a few times (but I don’t want to be rushed through brunch, either), but that is my only complaint.
I have to echo the negative reviews. We were encouraged by the seasonal menu, but our hopes were quickly dashed. Early on a Friday night, they were out of one of the not-so-many entrees on their menu. How does this happen?! It’s a Friday night, for god’s sake. The chicken cordon bleu was overcooked and artless, and I’m guessing the potatoes had been prepared many hours (perhaps days?) earlier, then plopped down next to an unappetizing blob of spinach puree. The French onion soup featured a strange broth that seemed like something (bad) from a can. They had Leffe on tap (yeah!) but it was flat and stale (blech!). Yes, considerably overpriced for the value. The service was friendly, the one bright spot. We will not be back.
After a first disappointing experience (lukewarm food that took forever to arrive, waitress didn’t know how to open a bottle of wine…) we decided to give Blue Bistro another shot but with less challenging food. We sat at the bar and had more “bar food” than upscale dining. The french onion soup was good except for the hunk of plastic in it. The bartender was great and actually comped our meal. Huge points for customer service.
But the kitchen seems like a big problem. Over 30 minutes after my soup got 86′d, our food finally arrived. Hamburger came barely warm (probably sitting since the kitchen didn’t tell bartender the order was up) and with edible flowers on it. All the pretty garnish in the world isn’t going to hide a lukewarm mediocre burger. My salad with sliced steak should have been a no brainer except that the steak was raw in the middle. I can deal with pretty rare beef but this was blue and cold. So basically I got a small salad for dinner. Free! But I guess you get what you pay for.
At one point we overheard the waitstaff talking about what things needed to be done. One remarked “Oh, and can you polish all of the brass on the Titanic?” So, not expecting this sinking ship to be in the neighborhood for long.
I have been to Blue Bistro twice and have enjoyed my experience both times.
Each time our waitress knew which wines paired best w/ their dishes and was very attentive in ensuring all of our needs were taken care of.
Personally I do not like the fondue however I think the menu includes many eclectic choices that are made w/ ingredients that are rarely used in this area.
The pricing is reasonable and you are able to get the experience of a hip urban city w/out having to travel very far from home.
I read the reviews first, and did not let them sway way decision—I still wanted to try this restaurant/bistro. I’m glad that I did . . .
The reviews were “exact.” The food was excellent, the atmosphere good—and the wait staff still experience some growing pains . . . but overall, our experience was positive and we would definitely return.
I’m not making excuses, but we did make out first visit on Valentine’s Day, traditionally a very BUSY night out. I made a reservation for four (in January), called to confirm the evening before (Feb. 13th) but still overheard the person who greeted us at the door whisper to the manager, “There’s no reservation here for them.” Thankfully, they quickly overlooked their error and managed to seat us within a few short minutes . . .
Our server was initially attentive, maybe a bit too “diner,” rather than “bistro” . . . but there’s nothing wrong with “friendly” service—I guess I’m just not used to it any more. Even still, they could continue to “push” the level of sophistication a bit with staff members (I’m basing my experience on one visit though).
First, we ordered wine flights—all were good, though not a single one was exact to what was listed on the menu—something was missing, or they had run out of it . . . rest assured, our served guaranteed that we were given something comparable, or of better quality . . .
Our food was incredible and flavorful; staff was certain to determine if it was prepared exactly to our liking . . . Mussels, Scallops and Hanger Steaks were among our choices. Everything was fresh—dessert was good too, unique.
Service was slow . . . I believe they were feeling the strain of the evening—but we will definitely be back. Another “quality” addition to Second Street . . .

We enjoyed our experience at the Blue, but the food was overpriced. We enjoyed at $22 chicken thigh dressed up as Chicken Cordon Bleu.
