I’m not sure who Brian is talking about in his review but I would imagine his review is meant for everyone who didnt like this place! I have to clarify my review obviously for Brian! I do live in a big city (I have a place here in town also) and have dined in almost all of the larger cities around this country and abroad so I can say without a doubt that Brian has one thing correct which is that you get what you pay for; that being said….YOU SHOULD GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!! NOT LESS nor MORE! You should however be able to expect that from any place whether its in Harrisburg or Los Angeles…or even Philadelphia…and trust me you can! Harrisburgs cheap living has nothing to do with it…This place is not cheap and I believe it doesnt claim to be! I can tell you that people in larger cities with more to choose from wouldnt put up with this type of service or downfall of the food quality either…even Walmart gets complaints if the hot dog is cold!!

    Clear enough Brian?

I used to love to go to Char’s, but the food quality keeps slipping… Last visit, the server acted as if she was doing us a favor by showing up at our table. There were three of us ( 2 appetizers, 2 salads, three entrees,1 dessert and 6 glasses of wine)and the tab exceeded $300. Char used to work the room, but no she pretty much hangs out with her buds. Sad.

I find it hilarious that people in this area will give a restaurant a poor review for having higher prices. As if charging more for substantially higher quality and better prepared foods is a terrible idea. You get what you pay for, it’s the whole experience all together. People really need to get out more around here, go to a real sized city anywhere in the country and you’ll realized the cost of living around Harrisburg is CHEAP, not normal. Sometimes it’s okay to eat at higher priced restaurants, some people enjoy better food. We can’t all be happy with eating at Walmart for the rest of our lives.

Had some friends come into town and they wanted to come here (against my wishes) to eat once again. We had the worst night ever; even my friends said that they should have heeded my warning. I am not sure what’s going on here but the service was horrible and the food lacked any significant resemblance of past experiences. It was downright embarrassing! Enough Said!

The building housing Char’s was the site of several restaurants which we frequently patronized - the best of the lot was au Jour le Jour. As one who dined regularly at Char’s even before she had her liquor license, we thought a worthy successor to au jour had arrived. But the culinary ego of Ed the chef has cast a shadow over the place. How many times do we need to hear about the non traditional shepherd’s pie - a crafty way to use up unsold filet mignon; or to have the fish piled on mashed potatoes in the best ’90’s restaurant tradition. Hope Char’s terrific spirit can prevail and she can get the place back on course

    I would say three words describe Char’s; over-cooked, over-seasoned, over-priced. (o.k. that’s actually 6 words).

Did I mention $15 Bucks for a quarter inch of Scotch!(Bottle cost is $32 at the store)

After all the reviews (should have checked this site first) We thought we would try this place. There was 5 of us and we ate quite a bit; several apetizers (loved the oysters)and several overpriced watered down cocktails. The food was pretty good; not a huge serving for the price but good all the same. The one thing that bothered me the most is that the waitress always had me use the same glass for my imported beer, even after asking for a fresh one she still used the old one. We did get the feeling that the max amount of bread allowed is 2 baskets per table and there where 5 of us; because she scowled at us when we asked for more! All in all not bad if you want to drop 400 plus bucks and still have issues! Would we go again…Probably NOT!

After much anticipation for trying Char, it was not what I thought it would be. Over priced for Shipoke/Harrisburg, this is NOT NYC after all!

So overpriced and so not very good. Expensive by any standard, if a Mario Batali restaurant in NYC be significantly cheaper, something is seriously wrong. Single-handedly put me off escargot, I cannot forget the slimy, rubbery slug I was served. Char, please go away and let Shipoke have a good restaurant. Even a deli will do!
