Me loved the food, it is as real as it gets, not sure if its the same owners as Papines from 6th im sure it is, but the food is outrageously good! Being Jamaican and CHinese it is a relief again to have REAL west indian food here in Central PA! Kudos for bringing some real culture. Coco bread, stew chicken, hot and tasty, curry goat…man listen! Ox tails are off the hizzy! call dem right now and get an order in!
We had some friends over on Friday night and we decided to try Jameans delivery. We ordered the Brown Stew Chicken, Jerk Chicken, Curried shrimp, a large selection of sides, some cocoa bread, and a few meat patties. It took almost an hour for the food to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. Every bite was incredible. The beans and rice that come with the entrees are not just filler. We had some left over and I had them for lunch the next day . . . wonderful . . . the baked Mac-N-Cheese was the best I’ve had in a while. We all preferred the beef patties to the chicken, but both were good. Three entrees, some additional sides and a couple of patties were plenty for four hungry adults. We all enjoyed the meal a lot and vowed to become regular customers.
So on Sunday afternoon I had a hankering for something to eat, so I placed a call and walked up to pick up a Papines Cheese Steak . . . I was going to go with the Jam-Down cheese steak (with steak and shrimp) but I figured I’d go with just the papine cheese steak at first . . . I didn’t bother to ask what made it Papine’s, and it wasn’t much that special, but it was a great sandwich . . . as far as I could tell, it was mostly just a very good cheesesteak with mayo and garlic salt . . . It was quite good, don’t get me wrong, but “papine” didn’t really mean much. I could see where shrimp would have really put it over the top, so I’ll be trying the jam-down on my next trip.
So far I’m very excited by this place. There’s an attention to detail in the food that’s hard to find. The restaurant itself doesn’t seem to be anything special, but when I went in to pick up my cheesesteak the staff was very nice. The free delivery is a nice option.
When I first looked at the menu, I was a bit skeptical about some of the more expensive items, but after my experiences this weekend, I wouldn’t hesitate to try anything . . . in fact, I think my next choice is either going to be the jam-down cheesesteak or the Grouper.
Do yourself a favor and give this place a shot . . . this is exactly the type of restaurant that Harrisburg needs more of.
Over the past month, I have been planning a bridal shower for my best friend who lives in Harrisburg. My friend absolutely loves hearty, flavorful food, and since I couldn’t make the food myself, and I am not from the area, I skowered the internet for a restaurant that could cater for approx. 30 hungry women. I somehow stumbled across the previous review by Brian and since I did not find any conflicting opinions, I decided to go with Jameans with Papine.
I called Jameans with Papine with only 5 days notice, and much to my surprise and delight, they accepted my order. The event was this past weekend, and I must say, they were kind, courteous, and extremely timely with the piping hot food. The price was reasonable, and the food was wonderful. My guests kept asking if I made the food myself, and when I told them I hadn’t, they were excited to find out that there was a Jamaican American restaurant in the area.
I couldn’t have been more pleased with the results of the order, and most importantly, my best friend was so happy I ordered fun, flavorful food, instead of the ordinary boring flat food most restaurants serve. This place has only been open for a few months, and I really hope they become a thriving business as long as they stick with the quality and customer service I experienced this past weekend. Good luck to you Jameans with Papine!
I made sure to visit this Jamaican/American restaurant to see what the place was all about as soon as I noticed it opened. The restaurant is next door to Garden Vietnamese Restaurant, a block over from the new Harrisburg Area Community College Midtown Campus - in my opinion an excellent location to open up shop. At any rate, the place just opened a week ago, and is modest looking on the outside as well as inside. Downstairs there are a few tables, a billiards table and an electric jukebox, I’m foreseeing this place as a pretty nice little student lounge. Up the small stairway there is a counter immediately on the left where you can place an order and a number of little tables that fill the room. Again, pretty modest inside but what is most important to me is what’s really most important (that’s the food of course). The place is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
I tried the curry chicken with steamed cabbage and rice ‘n beans. Absolutely delicious. I was a little doubtful of the authenticity of the food until I had a taste, then there was nothing except planning a return visit to try something else. The food really did it for me, and the authenticity of the place was confirmed when I met Kenny the owner, or as everyone calls him “pops.” From the 5 minutes we chatted, Kenny seems to me a pretty stand up guy. He’s got an obvious Jamaican accent and has tried his hand at making a successful Jamaican restaurant a number of times before. I’m optimistic that this place will stick for him though as the food and location are both great.
By the way, for anyone curious Pops explained to me that “Jameans With Papine” is a combination of American and Jamaican names personal to him, synonymous with the type of food served from the kitchen at 306 Riley Street in Harrisburg.
