Stay away from this place and spend your money where it is appreciated, where there is good food, and where the place is clean. This place is NOT family-friendly, and the staff acts as if you owe them something. This place has really gone down hill. Try Sapporo down the road or the new Thai place up the road. There is no comparison.

We loved this place before they moved but our last couple of visits were not great. Last night will be the last time we go there. We had reservations for 7:00 and didn’t sit down till 7:50. By 8:30 we still had not seen a waitress or even been given water to drink. We brough a bottle of wine with us but had to go back to the kitchen to beg for a couple of glasses to drink it. Finally gave up and went acroos the street to Sapporro for dinner.

Valentine’s Day this year kind of snuck up on us given the crazy weather and its effect on work days and weekends. Having waited until the last minute, I thought I’d give Mikado a call on Friday for a Saturday reservation. The woman answering said “Just walk in, you’ll be fine,” then abruptly hung up on me. I should have know then what to expect. We arrived to a large crowd waiting in the lobby and no one to take our name. When someone finally did, he barely acknowledged us. He did however ask others if they were waiting for hibachi and all said yes. We decided we just wanted sushi and informed the host. He said he would then seat us immediately. We were taken to a table with a high chair which had been left by prior diners and had to ask for it to be removed. We then noticed the floors were filthy and at least 3 nearby tables still had dirty dishes on them. I understand it was busy because of the holiday but I also think a restaurant should know they’ll be busy on Valentine’s Day weekend and plan accordingly. Plus, dirty conditions are just unacceptable. We didn’t even want to try the sushi and promptly left. The host said nothing as we walked past and headed up the street to Sapporro East, where we should have gone in the first place. Their sushi is always fantastic, the place is clean, and the staff attentive and friendly.

Easily our favorite sushi place. The rolls are tight and the fish fresh. BYOB helps in the wallet as well.

We frequently go out for sushi, and when we tried Mikado, it tasted quite fishy - not exactly fresh. Relative the several sushi restaurants in Harisburg, we found it the least desirable. . . but we decided to give Mikado another chance (everyone has an off night), thinking that perhaps the hibachi might be better; so we made reservations for six people (several weeks in advance) for Valentine’s Day. When we showed up for our 8:00 reservations, there were dozens of people in line. It took us 10 minutes to find anyone who could even find a reservations list or provide any information about seating - then we were told that reservations were meaningless and that we would not be seated until at least 9:30 (which in restaurant-speak means more like 10:00)!! As someone who frequents restaurants, we found this cold and unresponsive attitude of refusing to recognize reservations completely unacceptable; it also put us in a tough spot so late on such a popular night . . . nevertheless, we decided to take our chances elsehwere, so we left and went down the street to Sapporo East, where we cosistently have found both the service and the sushi excellent. In complete contrast to Mikado, we were greeted with gracious warmth at Sapporo East, and the staff went out of their way to accommodate us on such a busy night within 1/2-hour (without reservations). In the end, we all felt very happy to have escaped Mikado, since the fresh sushi ingredients and service at Sapporo East made for a superb experience, as usual. In short, we will NEVER RETURN TO MIKADO AGAIN!

Went to the Mechanicsburg location for a New Year’s Eve dinner with a party of 12. Not only did all the hibachi diners get their food served, but they were done eating by the time the sushi diners go their food delivered to the table. I realize this was a busy night for them, but still, this sort of thing annoys me at a restaurant.

The sushi was loosely rolled and had a bit of a fishy/artificial taste to it. The last two visits of mine I’ve been highly disappointed with their sushi. Next time I eat there I’ll have to stick to the hibachi.

Best Sushi in the area Says:

Mikado is by far the best sushi & hibachi in the Harrisburg area. Prices are very affordable, and I have never been let down by the quality and hospitality.
    Highly recommended!
