I LOVE THE TAVERN AT MOUNT HILL. IT IS MY RESTAURANT OF CHOICE! THE CRABCAKES ARE THE BEST IN TOWN. THE SALADS,SOUPS AND ENTEES ARE CAREFULLY CHOSEN TO PROVIDE A CREATIVE AND BALANCED UPSCALE MENU AT POPULAR PRICES. WHEN YOU ORDER A SANDWICH AT LUNCHTIME IT IS BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED AND YOU HAVE A CHOICE OF FRESH FRUIT, CHIPS OR FRIES TO ACCOMPANY IT. I AM PLEASED THAT I CAN MEET FRIENDS THERE OFTEN AND NOT WORRY ABOUT THE COST FOR EACH OF US. THE WAITSTAFF IS PLEASANT AND HELPFUL.I WOULD ENCOURAGE THOSE WHO HAVE A PROBLEM WITH
ANYTHING TO TELL THEIR WAITPERSON. I BET HE OR SHE WILL HELP.
My wife and I went here early in the spring and it seemed quite pleasant. I plan to go back and see if it is consistent as that is a BIG problem with restaurants in the Harrisburg area. One time the food/service is great the next time one or the other is not.
It is unfortunate that illiterates like Joey are permitted to make comments, but it is a free country. In the future Joey keep your story and poor spelling to yourself.
I haven’t been to Mount Hill Tavern yet. I plan to visit. This is more about the Web site in general.
There are three ways to go with reviews here. Only one of them works.
1. You can come on wanting only to say positive things, and apologizing for any fair criticism. That does not work. If everything is good, nothing is differentiated.
2. You can write a negative review and try to gross out everyone with it, JOEY. That does not work. People are coming on wanting to find a place to eat, not to lose their appetite.
3. You can write a balanced review, say if it’s good, say if it’s not so good. It’s the only way this Web site will be what it can be. Not politically correct; not willfully disgusting; just straight.
Joey obviously thought that review was funny..about as funny as this dude wearing $1000 shoes! When you bash a place try using some class Joey or go back to Jersey.
The one night me and my wife were on are 3rd anniversary and we thought of going some were special. So we went to mount hill tavern and ordered a fine meal but when i recieved the meal i was astonished on how the food there was prepared, it looked like te chef took my entree to the bathroom and plooped one rght on my dinner plate. My wifes meal looked like Seals face and was cold as liquid nitrogen. As we left a man threw up on my $1000 dollar shoes. It just goes to show how bad this place sucks.
My husband and I and two friends went to eat dinner we were there during happy hour so the appetizers were half price so we got two and they got one. We had the smoked motzerella and the truffled maccaroni and cheese. If that was smoked motzerella I would eat dirt that was plain not fully cooked regular motzerella with absolutly no flavor. The mac and cheese was noodles with it tasted like a small amount of motzerella it was not creamy at all. Our entrees were ok nothing to write home about. The chef seems to however have a fasination with rosemary it was on all the entrees we ordered and we all got something different. unless flavor is added to the food we won’t be going back.
Had lunch there today. The food was delicious. My husband had fish and chips, I had a panini. However, the service was unbelievably slow and uncoordinated. At a more upscale restaurant such as this, I should never have to look for my waitress, wonder where my food is, have an empty glass.
When we dined here previously, during the dinner hour, there seemed to be too many servers assigned to each table. Unfortunately, at lunchtime, the opposite seems to be the case.
Get it together, Mount Hill, for the sake of the FOOD!
I too feel bad writing this review based on what some others have written. There were some positives and negatives to our experience. Our service was excellent, and the wine list superb. I would definitely go back for cocktails with girlfriends but I doubt I will ever dine there again. The Tavern is very close to our home and when my parents came to visit I thought it would be a wonderful place to try. Every time I drive past the restaurant I always think what a beautiful job they have done renovating it.
We decided to sit on the deck due to arriving about 15 mins before the dinner hour starting. We had looked over the menu before going to the restaurant and thought that everything on it sounding delicious. We order appetizers, the calamari and the macaroni and cheese with truffles. I am a very big calamari fan, but was terribly disappointed with this dish. For starters, it was fried, which, (and I could totally be wrong,) I do not think that menu stated nor did I expect at a place that presents itself as a “higher-end” establishment. Fried calamari is for bars and chain restaurants. However, that would not have been so bad but the flavor was poor too. The dish was very bland, and the only thing we could really taste was cinnamon, which did not go well by it self or with the sauces provided. The macaroni was “ok”… nothing to brag about. Now the salads were terrific. I can see why people who have gone here for lunch have a better opinion. I would definitely eat the salad again and again. Now for the entrees. I will not say they were bad, just nothing special. I chose the Seafood Strudel and was disappointed. The dish was wrapped in dough and baked which was very crispy and good. However, the seafood inside was something, again, that I would expect from one of the chain restaurants. There were to be three types of seafood, crab, scallops, and shrimp. The shrimp where the baby ones that you buy frozen, the scallops the same, and I could barely taste the crab. All of this was mixed with a cream sauce. This is just not what I am expecting for a dish that is much more expensive than something VERY similar at another local eatery. My fiancé got the crab cakes and again, more breading than anything else… again not what I expected from an establishment with its own temperature controlled wine room. My father got a steak, which he enjoyed, and my mother one of the specials which again she felt this was something you could purchase a chain restaurant.
I do not find our family to be picky; we were looking to have a nice dinner together, and in all the service made that happen. I can not stress enough how great of a job they do in that area. If I could give the owners any advice of the food quality it would be, keep the items you offer fresh rather than produce large quantities, because as of now the food quality does not fit the ambiance or perception that you lead people to believe that you are offering. If you are purposefully trying to offer middle of the road quality dishes, you should probably lower the prices.
I’ve now had one lunch and two dinners at Mount Hill and it’s a very good addition to central PA dining. Salads are fresh, meals are both delicious and attractive. Portions are a little large for my tastes, but we’re learning to share part of our meal and that works well. If I had to mention a negative, it would be that it’s a little noisy (I’d like to go on their “off” night). Service is never fast, but you could say it’s relaxed. Don’t go if you’re in a hurry, but do go for some really good, creative food.
I have had a chance to have both lunch and Dinner at the Tavern. I am a very fussy eater and am always worried if I’ll be able to find something on the menu. Well to my delight, my salad at lunch was fresh and delicious AND the dressing was yummy. My dinner was wonderful (I would have liked more home made pasta!) and very well presented. I look forward to more visits to come!
Nice, warm relaxed atmosphere! Good service and both appitizers and both entrees where well above the average! Well worth the drive and the reasonable cost.
I feel bad writing a bad review but when we were deciding where to go for dinner I wish I would of found a review that would of stopped us from going. I have to say that the food was awful-not bad-but awful. We had several samplings that night and honestly, everything was poor. How could you try so many different samplings of appetizers and entrees and it not find one thing tasty? We asked ourselves the same thing, WE ARE NOT PICKY EITHER!! It truly was that bad and for the price of almost $100 that night I can bet that this rest. will not be around long. DO NOT GO-IT WILL BE A DISAPPOINTMENT!!!!
Upon walking in I immediately had a warm feeling about this place, A good wine selection, friendly, professional and accomidating staff. The food is delicious and well presented. An enjoyable experience and I will be going back again.
