A group of my friends went to spice for happy hour on 8/26/10…we were all very displeased with our service. When we approached the hostess stand..we were completely ignored. I finally had to ask the hostess if we could seat ourselves or if she needed to seat us. She then just said “yeah..u wanna sit inside or outside”. After we were seated our waiter was for the most part pleasent. We were all surprised however when I waiter informed us that if we wanted drinks for the happy hour price we would have to go to the bar to get the drinks as he could not bring them to us. I have never heard of any other establishment doing this. But what was funny about the whole situation is that the table next to us was ordering drinks apart of the happy hour and having the drinks delivered to their table via their waitrees. All I can say is that if you want okay food and horrible service then Spice is the place to go to.
HORRIBLE DINING EXPERIENCE. My fiance and me went to Spice thinking it’s hip look would mean great food too. We were wrong. I ordered a steak, and it was horrible. It wasn’t cooked to my order, and it was plain tasting. Not only that, but it took nearly an hour to get our food. I will never go to this restaurant again, and I suggest anyone thinking of dining out in harrisburg to hesitate before choosing to eat at Spice.
Went to Spice on both the nights when I was in Harrisburg - 03/29 and 03/30 and sat at the bar.
The food on the first night was great. I got their Chicken Chipotle, and it was exactly as I would have expected - spicy, hot, and savoury. The chicken was overdone, but I absolutely loved the sauce.
The next day I got their Black and White Tuna - their version of the seared tuna. The plate arrived atleast 25 minutes after I placed the order. The bar attendent was very appologetic, however, after I sliced through the tuna, it was ice cold from the inside - literally frozen. I sent it back, and 10 minutes later the manager comes to me asking me how I expected the tuna to be. I explained to him saying that seared tuna is supposed to be uncooked from the inside, not FROZEN). Another 15 minutes later, I got HALF of it back and was totally nuked and cut into smaller appetizer pieces.
A very unplesant experience, and there was no compensation or appologies from the chef. The place was extremely loud, and for both the nights the owner was the loudest and abnoxious person at the bar. I am certainly never going there again - both the chef and the owner needs to have an attitude check before I’m going back there again.
well it appears from the previous 2 posts that spice hasnt gotten much better. the meal took forever and a day and when it came out, unsurprisingly it was cold. where did this “chef” go to school ? VOTECH the meals look slightly better than my highschool lunches. the “garnishes” were laughable and the flavor was non-existant. lol, and the “chef-guy” was in the dining room yelling at one of the wait staff AGAIN. seems to be a pattern there. maybe if he spent more time in the kitchen overseeing his employees and less time harassing the wait staff the meals would be worth the small fortune they’re charging. but the icing on the cake was when we were leaving and the “chef” was out front, I guess on a smoke break and asked us how our meal was. when I looked at him he had sweat all over his face and he wreaked of alcohol. one of the girls i was with said, ok. then he got this look on his face like he was gonna explode. so we just walked away. the owner should keep this guy on a leash or find someone that can do the job. i’ve heard that they go through employees like water there and i can sure see why. we def won’t be going back and from the crowds at night looks like a lot of other people agree.
Upon entering Spice, I observed the head chef screaming and embarrasing the hostess to “answer him when he is speaking to her”. I have never seen such a terrified look on a girls face in my entire life. My meal took forever, not to mention it looked pre- cooked. I had a window seat right inside of the door near a computer, and over heard the manager screaming at a waitress that she has to pay for a small mess up she didnt mean to hit on the computer. wait wait, here comes the topping! A DEAD! DEAD cockroach in the mens bathroom! I was appauled! Management seemed horrible and I will not return to this place again! Do yourself a favor, and pick somewhere else!
Last night my partner and I had dinner at Spice. Not only do the prices seem to be rising but the quality of the food is diminished. It was approaching 9:00 pm so we ordered simple salads, the Crabacado and Grecian Chicken Salad. The Crabacado salad had 4 small slices of avocado and I defy their management to show me where the crab was! Not wanting to make a scene I was resolved not to go there again, I could make a much better crab salad at home by getting a recipe off of the Food Network!
When the food arrived we still had no utensils. Now for the fun part, when the bus boy came to clear the table he spilled the remainder of my salad dressing all over me! I realize anyone can make a mistake and to his credit he apologized twice, however when I came out of the men’s room (which looked like it had been victimized by a frat party) the bus boy and waitress were at their station laughing.
BAD CHOICE! I paid the bill and left but am determined to contact the owner. Things in Harrisburg will never change without action.
Well, I am surprised. I really enjoyed Spice. I honestly have stayed away from this restaurant for so long due to all the negative comments. I have been given suggestions to go to every place under the sun in central pa but Spice.
I think Spice deserves a 2nd chance. We all know Harrisburg is learning the ways of the restaurant. I believe Spice has finally worked out its kinks and has its hat back in the race.
Although the service is a little slow the food was worth the wait- and who can pass up 38ounce Margritas! Whoa!
If you are looking for a laid-back south beach way of life, leave your rat race and park here for an evening. Ciao!
@ Christine (#21): I’m not sure your food poisoning was from the cheese….
A group of 7 co-workers and I went to Spice for lunch last August (just a few weeks before you were there) and every chicken dish that was served to us was VERY pink and odd-looking in the center…which, of course, you only see if you either cut or bite into it. Another person ordered a burger medium-well, only to have it come out charred on the outside and cold & bloody on the inside…twice. My salad, which was supposed to have some kind of citrus dressing, seemed instead to be covered in some kind of thick, gloppy marmalade. The only food our table got that wasn’t disgusting were a turkey sandwich and the french fries.
And then there was the service, which can only be described as atrocious. Our waitress was extremely unpleasant from the moment we sat down, to the point of being almost hostile when we complained about the dangerously undercooked food. Drinks (waters and an iced tea) took ages to arrive and the food took even longer, which is perplexing given how, well, raw it was. We had told the waitress prior to ordering that we’d need individual checks, but when she finally brought us the bill, it was all together. I thought she was going to lose it and start throwing punches when we very nicely (especially given how horrible the whole meal had been) asked that she separate the checks as requested earlier.
I have been a waitress for nearly 5 years and I would be absolutely mortified if I’d served anyone such dangerously undercooked chicken. There would be no end to my apologies, the chef’s apologies, or the restaurant’s owner’s apologies, and anyone who received the raw poultry would get free meals, replacement food done properly, and a complimentary dessert. You just can’t make a restaurant work if you’re giving people food poisoning, accidental or not! Everyone has bad days, and I know I sometimes goof up when I’m serving, but you can’t take your issues out on your customers.
For the sake of everyone who is still eating at Spice, I sincerely hoped they’ve addressed these problems…but I’m neither counting on it nor eating there ever again.
Total disappointment? No that would be an improvement. I’ve had better nachos out of my microwave at home using stale chips and moldy cheese. Did anyone know spinach can be served fried? I’d never seen this “method” until it came to me on the plate with my main entree, which was over $20. It wasn’t on the menu as such; I think the chef was actually too lazy to boil it.
There is a reason you can’t find a website for this restaurant. Run…fast and far…save your money and buy some drinks. After eating at “Spice” I will need a few to forget my terrible experience.
I’ve been to Spice several times for dinner on Friday evenings, a very busy time for them. I have to say I am never disappointed & always look forward to going there when I’m in the area. The staff is always very friendly. The manager & Executive Chef Jeffrey have come by our table to ask how the food & service were. The menu changes often and is always creative. The food & service I’ve had there is always excellent.
Spice has taken a turn for the worse. Today was the second time we’ve visited and the restaurant was actively doing construction work during the lunch hour. We should have left, as did most of the other patrons.
But, we stuck it out because our server looked forlorn and desperate. The food was decent, but the atmosphere was ridiculously loud and probably unsanitary. (plaster dust in your food, anyone?)
The owner seems not to care about dining patrons — too focused on building its reputation as a club. It’s sad; Spice used to have great potential. We won’t return.
I don’t know where some of the other people went, but the only word to describe this food was FAB-U-LOUS! My hubby had the lobster, which was not over- or under-cooked…it pulled right from the shell with ease. I had the Mahi Mahi, which absolutely melted in my mouth. This food was so terrific that it made the wine taste bad! I needed a moment of silence after every mouthful. There aren’t enough kudos for (chef) Jeff and his staff for the job they did. AMAZING! We will certainly be making many return visits!
My companion and I a very good chili beef soup, then the trouble began. The salad was served with tomatos (allergic), wrong dressing, when our entrees were served my companion received the wrong dish (strewn with tomatos), then when they served the overcooked chicken dish she found herself without a fork, the waiter admitted that maybe he should write down the order without trying to memorize it, the bottle of tabasco that was on the table was absolutely the most horrific, gloppy, gloopy spice bottle I had ever seen. Coderus Creek soup anyone? Oh, ice was served for our water out of a plastic bar cup. Don’t think we’re going back.
Two words—FOOD POISONING. We had dinner there last night. I got the chicken sandwich with gorgonzola. I thought it may have had an odd taste to it (the gorgonzola). This morning, I was violently ill. I didn’t eat out anywhere else yesterday, so it had to be Spice. I have no fever or other symptoms so it is not the flu.
I will not be going back to Spice again. (and I probably won’t be eating gorgonzola anytime soon, either!)
I went there, ordered a burger that upon biting seem better suited to be sliding across ice toward net or goal. The hockey puck burger was one thing, getting double charged on my card was just too much. 2nd street has much better offerings than Spice.
I had a late lunch with a friend at Spice a week ago and the food was not so appealing and it tasted even worse and I only got a grilled chicken caesar salad. I used to love the chicken salads when it was Fisaga’s — It had romaine lettuce, which is typically used on a caesar salad and freshly grilled chicken with a nice flavor. This ceasar salad, however, had iceberg lettuce and the chicken tasted and looked like process chicken. On a positive note, I will say that I enjoy the atmosphere but as far as the food, I would not recommend Spice.
Monday night, myself and a group of coworkers (10 total) went to Spice to have cocktails and a bit to eat. We were excited because we had not been there to eat since the ownership had changed and a new chef was running the kitchen.
The over experience was very bleak. The service was poor, waiting up to 30-40 minutes between visits to our table by our waitress. It took over an hour go get our appetizers which were brought to our table randomly and cold. We also order two seafood appetizers only to be told 30 minutes later that they were out of them.
We waited over 75 minutes for our dinners to arrive and they were cold, the tuna was over cooked, and the other dishes were so poor that half our group did not eat their dinners.
The manager came over to attempt to make this horrible experience better but only added gasoline to the fire when he took on a very defensive attitude and started speaking loudly with one of the group members.
We frequently have business dinners and I speak for the group as a whole, we will never go to Spice again nor would we ever recommend this lousy establishment to anyone we know.
When I read those two employees comments from the Spice restaurant, I knew they were finished working there. First, the woman said if she didn’t get good tips, she couldn’t afford twice monthly trips to the shore. Excuse me! I make higher wages than this woman and I can’t afford those kinds of vacations. Second, she said that if you can’t leave a decent tip, stay home. When did she start speaking for the owner of the restaurant. He had every right to can this person.
The Spice was a neat place, We went there on Sunday, I got to watch the Nascar Race at the bar with some of my friends. We could be loud and enjoy ourselves without being told to quiet down. It was a fun outdoors place to eat and have a few drinks. The food was incredably good and the service was great. Our waitress was very polite and quick to serve. We will all go there again and also tell ours friends to do so. Try their crab cakes…the best around. Thanks again.
My wife and I ate at spice this past Sunday, we thought the selections were good the food was very good and the atmosphere was good. Sure it is loud and busy. But we truly enjoyed it. Everyone was friendly and the service was good and quick. Our waitress was very friendly and considerate. The portions were large and the prices were very reasonalble, especially for being in a large town. (Wish we had a place like this back home.) Thanks
Eric Desrosiers should be ashamed. Spice has been added to our list of restaurants that are ‘not in conformity with acceptable employee treatment principles’. My wife and I will never again patronize Spice.
The word “crap” from a waiter that was printed in the newspaper does not reflect an image any restaurant would want to portray - speaking of how he makes the customer feel if they do not leave a good tip. And when this was written it only said poor service.
Wow, Two employees, one was a manager also, were fired for talking to the press about the economy effecting their tips. Nothing bad at all about the restaurant. Just showed up for work and they weren’t on the schedule. I’ll never go in that place again, if that’s how they treat their employees. If anything, it got them some free press!
Terrible experience, mediocre food at best. I would not recommend Spice to anyone. Flies swarm the outside food displays (very unappetizing), most of the staff is clueless and incompentant, and we waited forever for service and food. Managment had opportunities to correct the experience and instead made it much worse by defelecting blame and being patronizing - totally unacceptable. I work in the industry and have experienced better customer service at a fast food drive-through. I will not be surprised when this restauant closes.
I have been to SPICE twice. Both times for their brunch on Sunday.
I must say the food is great! The eggs were cooked correctly and weren’t dried out like so many places are. The Andouille sausage was a wonderful meat choice rather then regular old sausage. Also the unsweetened ice tea was good, strong but good.
The second time I had the Cinnabon French Toast. I will say it tasted just like a Cinnabon cinnamon roll. Good portion and I had a side of bacon, which was not overly crisp and hard it was cooked properly. Bacon tatsed excellent, nice and smokey.
Yes the atmosphere is a night club, but that didn’t deter me from eating there.
The food sitting outside the restaurant wasn’t at all unappealing. It is what it is. You can’t make it look any better then it is. It didn’t look bad either.
On 6-24-08 my wife & I had dinner at 5:10 Pm. The service was very good & the Barbequed spare ribs were very good. Draft beers from 5-7 Pm were just $1.00 Mini brews & imported drafts were $2.00
Had lunch here today as this was pretty much the only place that was open on memorial day. Reading the other reviews on this site and having seen the tacky food display in front of the restaurant, this was pretty much our last choice.
While my expectations were quite low, I was pleasantly surprised by the food and service. Even though the restaurant was quite busy, we were seated in the area of our choice in 5 minutes. The waitress was prompt and attentive and the food was well prepared/ seasoned and overall a good value. We had a generous helping of calamari and some sandwiches for lunch (blackened tilapia and a halapeno burger). The choices are nothing to get excited about as they are quite simple. However, the food is tasty and the outdoor location is the best on second street.
Overall a pretty good choice for lunch. Some words of advise, the food display of dried out food doesn’t exactly make one want to eat the entrees on display. Such marketing is on par with hospital cafeterias, time to lose it!!!
My husband, sister-in-law, her boyfriend, and I stumbled upon this place after spending the day at the Whitaker Center. It was only about 5pm and the restaurant wasn’t extremely full. I loved the decor inside. Outside there was a display of real food that looked quite unappealing, as it had probably been sitting there for quite some time. The woman who greeted us, who turned out to be our waitress, was quite snobbish at first, but warmed up eventually. We did not order any alcohol as there were minors present, but it did take a little while for our sodas to arrive. The waitress was quite patient in allowing us to look over the menu, making suggestions along the way. The cream of crab asparagus soup was the best thing there, but hubby, who is a chef, raves about the chicken chesapeke. I had the sirloin tips, and I ordered them medium rare and they were medium well at the very least, the waitress informed us that they no longer cook steak to order. There were quite a few flies inside the restaurant when they decided to open up the big garage-type doors as well. Not sure I’d go back too soon, especially not later in the evening, as I hear the dress code is ridiculous. There are too many other interesting little places to try, and this one didn’t impress me enough to make it a repeat. Stop wasting food by leaving it outside all day. It looks bad, especially covered in bugs. A picture is worth a thousand words!! Also, if you’re going to play music, play it all the time. We were there for a little over an hour and they played three loud techno-esque songs with lots of silence in between. Talk about ruining the ambiance… Lots to learn.
Food was ok, service not great- we had to wait half an hour just to get our drinks from the bar and the restaurant was not full. We asked for bread, and they charged us for it. We won’t go back. They display food along with the menu outside the restaurant. Very tacky.

We liked your resturant, food was good. We will not be back because you unfairly fired two employees for talking to the Patriot News about tips.

I very love this restaurant.

Very tacky.

Our food was cold….when we finally got it. The service was very poor. We had to beg for service just to pay the ticket. I would not go again.
